What Powder Properties Matter for Diamond Tools
The sintered metal bond matrix in a diamond tool is typically a copper-tin or bronze alloy formed by pressing and sintering elemental or pre-alloyed powders at temperatures of 700–900°C. The matrix must provide sufficient hardness to retain diamonds while wearing at a controlled rate to continuously expose fresh cutting edges. The performance of every diamond tool, its cutting speed, wear rate and life, is determined by the metal powders that form it. Getting the powder specification right is the difference between a tool that cuts efficiently and one that fails prematurely.
Dendritic (tree-like) copper powder offers excellent compressibility and green strength during cold pressing, producing segments strong enough to handle before sintering. Spherical powders flow better but compact differently. Tin powder lowers the sintering temperature and controls matrix hardness. Pre-alloyed bronze powders provide consistent phase distribution and reduce segregation in complex formulations, producing denser segments. Coarser grades (-100 mesh) suit less demanding applications.
