What Powder Properties Matter for Brazing Alloys
Brazing pastes and preforms live or die by their rheology, and rheology starts with the powder. -325 mesh (below 45 microns) is the industry standard for paste formulation: fine, consistent particle size keeps the paste flowing predictably through dispensing equipment, prevents settling, and melts evenly through the 400 to 900 degree Celsius brazing range. Spherical gas-atomised morphology is preferred over irregular for exactly the same reasons.
Copper, tin, brass and bronze powders are the base materials for silver-free and low-silver filler metals. Copper serves atmosphere and furnace brazing of steels, tin lowers melting ranges and improves wetting, and brass and bronze compositions balance strength, colour match and cost in general engineering joints. Beyond pastes, the same powders are pressed into rings and preforms. Ronald Britton supplies all four families in fine mesh grades from UK stock, with chemical analysis per batch so filler metal producers can hold their alloy specifications tight.
